I am currently reading George Palmer's.
It's great, i recommend it.

Fitzgerald.

I compared some excerpts from translations. He gave me the best impression.

Lattimore.

Lattimore. It's the most literal translation.

I'm currently reading the Fagles translation, but if I were to re-read it (which doesn't seem unlikely) I would definitely be interested in Pope's.

Iliad: Probably Fagels
Odyssey: Fitzgerald

If you want to read the two works in the same voice I would choose Fitzgerald.

Everyone has their favorites, Ive only read Fagles but now Im going through Fitzgerald. I kind of like bits from both.

My redemption came when I met Christina, she was Spanish and couldn't really speak English at all.

Even though my last gf spoke Ancient Greek and Latin, this one could only muster a handful of Latin (she was catholic) and Spanish.

I would laugh holding and tell her that she could never appreciate Will's iambic pentameters or the beauty of the prose - she couldn't understand me, but she DID know what I was talking about, for the precum on my cargo shorts.

It's not true. They two posts are to show how people become arrogant and assert their intellectual superiority over others. This leads those who are inferior, to act similarly. Much like how abuse repeats down from father to son. Also, although expressing the irony of her false superiority be her leaving me for an guy who speaks a language she cannot. Being able to read the Iliad in Greek she was unable to read Os Lusíadas, The Ramayana or La commedia.
The Redemption is to show how the cycle repeats and that people even assert superiority over things they have not worked to achieve, such as height, looks, race etc.

1. The common wisdom used to be Lattimore for the Iliad, Fitzgerald for the Odyssey.

1a. Lattimore's translations are about giving you an idea of the Greek. Fitzgerald's translations are about giving you an English poem.

2. Rodney Merrill's translations of both are actually in dactylic hexameter.

3. Peter Green's new translation of the Iliad is a contender for best.

Anyone who doesn't think Lattimore's translation is the best is effectively retarded.

This would be relevant only if one was concerned solely with the stories and not also with their philosophical underpinnings. Homer wrote carefully and deliberately, and if you aren't reading at least a literal translation, you aren't reading Homer.

Lattimore and Fitzgerald are both good.

Fagles is alright for a layman.
