I wouldn't recommend anything to those types.

First you have the problem that by suggesting something, you're actually imposing your standards of quality on them and thus mind raping them, or something.

Secondly, even if you do get them to read it, you have a 50/50 shot that they'll even like it, and if they don't, they'll blame you.

No, don't recommend anything. Simply talk about Pynchon in some academic sense, like "oh his use of X literary device was so Y" or whatever. That way you can name-drop and pretend like you're actually intelligent, without having to risk anything.

>> No.7034790

Odd question, are you asking because you haven't read it? I mean otherwise, does it seem like she'd like a book about sex and death with scenes of pedophilia, cannibalism, and shit eating? Does it seem like she'd be offended or angry with you if she did encounter something she didn't like?

Seems more like you need to assess this woman more than the book. Unless you haven't read it and you're inquiring to the content?

I don't know. I'm asking if you've seen other people's reactions to this. She's a normie, so I'm wondering if normies can appreciate this level of humor

>> No.7034805

>>7034795
Well this isn't really a question to ask us. I don't know her. "Normie" is a silly way to put it. Does she have an interest in history, counterculture, surrealism, or postmodern literature? Do she enjoy perverse or goofy humor?

This is in your hands buddy. We can't hit on girls for you.

Tell it to me straight guys: why does /lit/ talk about this book so much? Is it an inside joke/meme (ie infinite jest), or is it a staple in some college/university reading curriculum?

Is it any good at all? And is the language too complex, or the themes too complicated to understand? I read an Ayn Rand book not long ago and it left me thoroughly disappointed. If I pick up another 700+ page novel, it had better not be a fucking meme or someone's homework.

If you want to see if you'll dig Pynchon, I recommend checking out The Crying of Lot 49. It's a good introduction to him. Short and sweet. If you like it, then you'll feel less hesitant to sink your teeth into his major works.

Rand is garbage. Pynchon is love. Pynchon is life.

Gravity's Rainbow is almost certainly the 2nd most influential "big novel" in 20th century literature (1st is Ulysses of course). Like >>7034927 said, try Lot 49 first - if you like it you have at least 3 masterpieces and 4 really good other books to look forward to.

Dude, man, this is the book.

Whatever you've heard, whatever you've read, whatever you think literature is, whatever you've read or been told to read by people who've been mistakenly put in a position to tell you what to read. It's all only been an attempt to prepare you for this book,

Gravity's Rainbow is what reading as a serious hobby in the 21st century is about. This book is why there is an active /lit/ board on 4chan. No one is here because of Hemingway or Dickens or Fitzgerald or Kerouac or any other forgettable stepping stone of an author, Anyone who is anyone is here is here because GR is their favorite book or because GR is a book that they are trying to digest and contextualize because it is not their favorite book,

If they can't handle Pynchon, who's at the low end of edginess, or even of emotional topics (though don't mistake me, his body is certainly not lacking in complexity) on the grand scale of things, then they probably aren't properly socialized adults.

If someone has Gravity's Rainbow on their shelf, they haven't read it unless they explicitly bring it up and say they have. There are two reasons for this:
1) Everyone who has read GR must tell everyone they meet that they have read it. The publishers give you a free shirt that says "I read GR" when you finish it.
2) Almost nobody who owns the book has read it. It is one of the most frequently "started but never finished" books in existence, right behind The Bible.
