Good options include

A wealthy small town in New England
Santa Fe
A cabin in the hills in California
Mexico City
Boston
Anywhere in Japan
Manhattan
New Orleans

Anything but these is a compromise if you're an American writing in English.

Writers make places literary, places don't make literary writers. So when my magnum opus gets published and the great wave of its influence begins to rise, wherever I'm residing at the time will be the most literary place on the planet, whether it's Paris or the middle of the American Nowhere. It's hard to say where that'll be. I don't know where I'll be tomorrow let alone when I'm 24.

Without the so-called gentrifying wannabes, NOLA would be Detroit right now. Honestly, a lot of the wannabes are more interested in preserving the local culture than I have seen in a lot of other cities. Yeah, some melanin rich individuals are angry their neighborhoods are being priced out of reach, but NOLA is one of the cheapest metro areas to live in, if you can't afford anything but the lower 9th and the projects, don't complain that the actual good parts of town are actually becoming what they are worth.

Second this.

Northeast Kingdom is the West Virginia of New England. Stay away unless getting caught up in the heroin scene or getting shot by moonshiners is your idea of a good time.

Fun fact: the vast majority of Downs kids in the state either come from NEK or Jericho because so many people there are either cousin fuckers or ultra-Christians who insist on cranking out kids into their 50s.

Whenever I see a "Keep Vermont Weird" bumper sticker I always chuckle because usually the driver is an out-of-state college kid who thinks the "weird" side of Vermont is Ben and Jerry's and writer's colonies and DUDE WEED LMAO and they have no idea we have this dark region of the state that no one talks about or visits

It's a global alpha city, the cultural center of Central America and rivals Paris and London for museums and old churches. Pynchon and Burroughs worked there among others, Leon Trotsky was assassinated there and it's home to the center of Latin American student revolutionary culture. Some of us who aren't monolingual enjoy using our Spanish and fucking Latina girls.

Cartels don't operate in the city because that would ruin their uneasy peace with the federales and you have to be stupid to get kidnapped unless you're a celebrity in which case your security has to be stupid.
