Me and two other guys are trying to start our own publication, we intend it to be an online magazine about art, culture and politics and I'd like /lit/ to give some tips and recommendations.

There are many things we need to learn and set straight before we start. We're kind of clueless about what people want to see, and we have no idea of how something like, say, Vice or Jacobin could become as big as they are, what they offered that other publications didn't, and we're trying to figure out what it is about. If you guys could just tell me what sort of thinkg you'd like to see or read about that you rarely get to, and what needs you have that most current publications are not attending, I'd be very very grateful.

>Jacobin
Never heard of it
Vice got big by doing shit other publications wouldn't (like stories on drugs) while still remaining professional-like in the pieces
They're kind of shit now though

A new one that I've been seeing getting more traffic is brietbart because similarly they do pieces other publications won't along with a right wing slant while still remaining professional
Then again they were funded by a super wealthy dude so...

You could honestly just rip off early vice and probably do decent

Have a scene you'll get writers from and cater to. Establish presence. Network.

Unless you already have that... maybe start a blog?

Well, it depends on what you have available to you. Do you know talented/accomplished writers that you can solicit for submissions?
Will it be local? National? Do you have access to interesting people for interviews? How will you promote it?

So just what makes you think you're ready to run your own publication?

I've friends who've started successful niche publications, and I am a consultant for a successful online magazine that is generating a pretty serious amount of ad revenue (after losing their shirts for decades in print).

What exactly do you bring to the table? It either better be one of three things:
- A lot of money.
- Exceptional writing talent.
- A broad network of people you can turn to for above.

Otherwise, 'lurk more' and go to work for another established, existing publication.

Sorry, got distracted, did not intend to leave it like that sounding so pretentious. Let me cut that down a little and say that 'from these folks I noticed they had....one of three things:'
