Is this book worth my time?
I read a bit but it quickly put me to sleep, will give it another go today but I wonder if I should just return it pick up something else instead.

>> No.7925569

Its not worth the paper its printed on, let alone your time

Only read it if you genuinely care about Ayn Rand's philsophy. If not, there's really nothing you'll get from this book.

Why not? You might get new perspectives on things.

Don't read it OP. Rand is very well known for having a very dry writing style, which is only the vehicle for her self-centred and egotistical philosophy anyways.

I've heard Anthem is half-decent as a science fiction story, however.

Can vouch for this. Atlas Shrugged is crap. I enjoyed Anthem, and it's a quick read.

How else are you going to realize that using your parents money to exploit the disadvantaged literally makes you a god? You can't become a polutician(sic) without knowing that...

I usually give every book a chance, but this is one of the most shitty books I've read in my life, philosophically and aesthetically

Yeah, I've been wanting to read it for a while now because of the Rush song inspired by it (2112).

It's worth your time for a few reasons

1. It gives you an insight into how some successful people actually think
2. It's a personal test: There IS wisdom to be found in Rand's writings. However, it's difficult to extract, because the writings themselves demand that you give in totally to their worldview or you are a degenerate parasite, and her critics are pretty much all kneejerk reactionaries. It's a good measure of how thoughtful you are if you can take what's worth it from Rand and leave behind the rest.
3. Insight into the libertarian mind in general.

It is a thoroughly enjoyable book. Just read it with no expectations. If the first fifty pages don't hook you, put it down.

We can spend all day rebutting critics who do not appreciate the romantic style it is written in.

But don't let anyone make you feel stupid for liking it; this world is full of phony intellects like Thomas Mallon.

What does it matter? My current novel is 1200 pages and a masterpiece.
Almost finished it.

Don't waste your time on that bitch, OP, took me one chapter of "moneymoney muh I wanna make money" to quit this shit.

Most of Ayn Rand's pals ARE reactionaries.

If objectivism was a massive ruse, then sure, Rand was successful.

>>7925563
Don't waste your time OP. Regardless of the philosophy it's bad writing. Conversations are unnatural and are more like debate transcripts.

There's a whole board dedicated to "successful" people

>1. It gives you an insight into how some successful people actually think

This is complete bullshit, Rand would hate 99% of todays "successful" people because they play up the altruistic "man of the people" role and don't adhere to her brand of objectivism

>Rand's ideological limitation is here clearly perceptible: in spite of the new impetus that the myth of the "prime movers" got from the digital industry (Steve Jobs, Bill Gates), individual capitalists are today, in our era of multinationals, definitely not its "prime movers." In other words, what Rand "represses" is the fact that the rule of the crowd is the inherent outcome of the dynamic of capitalism itself.

"reactionary" isn't limited to the political definition. And even then, you're wrong, reactionaries tend to loathe Rand.

>>7926107

I didn't say Ayn Rand was personally successful. I said her books are an insight into the minds of

>>7926179

SOME successful people. See qualifier "some."

Its shit, read the Fountainhead instead
