Keep the Aspidistra Flying. When Gordon Comstock finally gets some money for his writing and contemplates all the good things he could do with it then proceeds to blow it all on pricey restaurant wine and prostitutes who he can't even fuck because he's so drunk and they nick the remainder while he's passed out. It's hard to sympathise with him when he's so bent on fucking his life up but I wasn't so different for a time.
