Don Quixote thread.

Started the first book a few weeks ago and I just finished the Anselmo and Lothario/Don Fernando and Cardenio side story and man that was a slog. I can see why people like the book at a couple of points but the story/prose hasn't really overwhelmed me at this point. Once I'm finished reading the first part, is it alright if I put part 2 into my backlog for a while?

Part 2 is much less repetitive and much more interesting and well written imo.

It's more meaningful to read it all at once. When you finish the whole thing and realize it was written in 1605-1615, it hits you that he single-handedly invented or perfected simultaneously nearly every major literary device and tricks used by all fiction writers since then (assuming that you're well read and that you would have the background knowledge to recognize this from your memory of other books).

It's a work of stunning brilliance and wit.

I'm with you. I'm half way through the entire thing and the style hasn't changed. More side stories, more verbose, and more of Don Quixote's spiel that are like a page long. None of the side stories or the main plot has impressed me. I'm trudging through because I hate to quit on a book.

The fuck is taking you so long? You read 20 pages a day only? Part 2 is far superior to part 1 in any event, I think.

I think Part 2 is generally considered better than part 1. Well, maybe not better than the opening half of part 1, which is really the best part of the book IMO, but it is more thoughtful, self-aware and consistent. I was bored out of my mind by the Cardenio section, but it really is worth it to stick it out. Many of the most emotional and exciting scenes are in Part 2

DQ is great for a lot of reasons but it is also incredibly boring, it drags on forever.

It's sort of like the model-T ford, a brilliant pioneer of an automobile, the first in many aspects and a valuable piece of history - but you would not at all enjoy driving it on i-95 during rush hour in 2018.

The only part I thought was (maybe) boring was the Curious Impertinent, which Cervantes had the cheekiness to refute of his naysayers in the second volume so it wasn't entirely without pertinence. Other than that, I cannot agree that the Don's hijinks were ever unnecessary or lacking entertainment value.

It's funny and interesting but I found it repetitive and way too long.
