You get the impression that because of all the bad things he's done, and his absolute refusal to change, something, someone put a curse on him, forcing him to forever continue his journey to the tower; although, at the end of the series, you get the impression that something is different this time, and he may actually be able to break the curse, which IMO, the only way he could do that is to walk away.
