learn the cyrillic alphabet. learn the 200 most common words or so. then watch russian movies with russian subtitles, pausing along the way to look up the words you don't know (at the start, this will be a LOT) hearing the word as it appears on screen is THE most effective language learning method. there's an app that does just this, but i've forgotten the name and it's expensive as hell.
