Nineteen Flapper Eighty Era Four Shit

Sure, 1984 is great, blah blah blah. But speaking out of respect for Orwell, you should realize that he wrote far cleverer, greater things.

"more clever" -yes, i think of Animal Farm as being more 'clever' than anything else he's written.

greater -no. 1984 is the greatest and most influential piece he evar wrote.

1984 is a good book, but by know means is it Great.

I think its popularity comes from its status as the Book that defined "Big Brother", generally its the first place you go to when starting your mental rebellion.

When I read it, whilst I found it thought provoking, was overall bored.

I thought the ending was horrific and everything from the act where the Winston and Julia are caught, through to Room 101, seemed so rushed it was almost pointless.

1984 has become the Pulp Fiction of the Literary world.

Whatever merits the book holds are tarnished thanks to its idol status in Pop Culture, defeating the point of the book.

>1984 has become the pulp fiction of the literary world

But Pulp Fiction is a boring, stylized movie of flowery dialogue while 1984 is a classic piece of literature whose message is still felt to this day.

I think almost all serious readers can say that East of Eden is a wonderful work. It truly creates all characters, and none are wasted, and only one is poorly conceived (some readers claim that Kate is a cartoonish overly-evil character that seems fake with the realism of the other characters).

>> No.1105141

this book only gets hated on because it's well known, if it was some obscure book nobody ever heard of it would be the greatest book ever.

i would think most people on lit would agree with Brave New World.
honestly it had terrible character development, but the rest of the novel is amazing

I think most people like the idea of Brave New World but think that it is written in a way that makes it kind of a boring read. I don't think it is a good candidate for this thread.

>> No.1106156

I thought it was kinda boring. It's not really it's prose that's made it famous really is it? It's the political ideas right?

>> No.1106159

>>1106146
It was a horrible novel, but the ideas in it are god-tier. The idea of soma, in particular, is a perfect lens with which to examine almost anything.
