It's one of those series that's fun to start with but you'll probably lose interest in over time.

The cool thing is that you won't resent it for falling away, but still appreciate the smiles and sensible chuckles the earlier volumes brought you. The series offers a modest payoff on a minuscule investment.

So pick it up and put it down when it bores you. Nothing to lose here.

I unironically enjoy young adult, coming of age fantasy. There's something about a young boy growing up, making friends, going on adventures, fighting bad guys with swords and magic that's just fun and doesn't get old for me.

I've never anything by sanderson, lawrwnce, rothfuss, grrm or the classics that get posted here. I pretty much read no name authors I find on amazon's recommendations. I'm wondering what exactly makes the fantasy written by the more popular authors better? Are they just more mature or do they try and subvert the typical fantasy tropes (which I also enjoy)?

It was a meme. Gunpowder fantasy has been around for a while -- Warhammer Fantasy, Arcanum, even Shadowrun to some extent, all older properties. Strange & Norrell was the best out of the last batch but it wasn't that widely read. There's too much overlap with steampunk, I think, which as dumb as that's gotten still has a pretty conpelling aesthetic if nothing else. My guess is we might see a steampunk masterpiece someday but powdermagic will remain a niche subgenre.

I asked in >>11149491 because people are calling Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell gunpowder fantasy and I'm not sure it qualifies. The existence of "gunpowder" and all it implies is extremely incidental to the plot. It's arguably just historical fantasy. This is as opposed to stuff like the powder mage trilogy, which, as the name implies, entails wizards directly manipulating firearms and explosives.

Can someone please explain why Malazan is so hated here? Couple years ago it was hot shit all over /lit/ now it's like the mere mention of anything Erikson is sinful. The guy created what is possibly the largest cast of unique charachters/mythos in modern epic fantasy. The amount of depth he drew from his knowledge of world histories & cultures (being an anthropologist) & all the different philosophies & psychologies integrated into the series also proves as testament to his skill. I'm almost finished with the main series and have enjoyed it so far but I've seen a few complain it gets too overwhelming with the subplots and pointless characters (which I can understand after 8000+ pages of build-up)

Pic related is probably the most badass guy in the whole series other than Kruppe

Crimson Queen was really, really good. That Alec Hutson guy is already my favorite writer from the recent years along with Will Wight. Setting felt a bit too close to d&d and one of the twists was so obvious it was a bit painful, but those are about the only things I can nitpick. The first isn't really even much of a minus for me since I don't care about setting originality.

Wonder if there's any more writers that are similar to them, nothing terribly deep, just well paced and well structured consistent plot and characters. That sounds like describing something very average but 99% of everything else I read is often boring or otherwise terrible for parts or even whole books, rarely find anything that's just solid and entertaining all the way through.

I read the crimson queen and enjoyed it but don't really understand the massive amount of praise it got. It was good for sure but didn't seem all that special. I've also read the cradle series by will wight and enjoyed those as well. Will probably get around to reading the travelers gate trilogy by him later.

I can recommend 2 series that seem similar to those that I enjoyed even more. The first is benjamin ashwood by AC cobble. It's got a nice blend of politics and swords/magic. The second is the white tower by michael wisehart. It jumps perspectives but I never got annoyed by it. Neither are really deep and epic but I found them really solid and found myself staying up until 3 or 4am reading them.

Unless I'm just completely retarded, if you enjoyed the crimson queen and stuff by will wight I feel like you should enjoy those books as well

Yeah, I got Messiah I just didn't think it was as good as God Emperor or Children. I feel like Messiah didn't do as good a job of exploring the pitfalls of prophecy and holy men as much as the books focusing on Leto II.

It was quite interesting to see how the religious mantle that Paul was forced to adopt in Dune ended up growing beyond him, ultimately weakening and destroying the Fremen. But again, most of that really came out in the later books. I honestly think Messiah is the weakest of the series.

Obviously I only read up to Chapterhouse, I heard the non-Frank Herbert books aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Watts is definitely not going to be known as a 'great' author, but Blindsight was genuinely fantastic. It falls victim to a lot of scifi tropes and Watts has trouble writing dynamic scenes with a lot of action and movement, but his world building and exploration of ideas are both really enjoyable. Of course the actual idea behind Blindsight - that consciousness can be seen as a hindrance rather than a 'higher' function of more advanced creatures - is a load of rubbish (Watts even said he had convinced himself of this by the time he finished writing and editing), but it makes for interesting reading nonetheless.

Echopraxia was a good sidequel and in my opinion while the ideas being explored were not as thought provoking as in Blindsight, the actual plot was more enjoyable (though of course the characters weren't great and overall I'd rate Echopraxia slightly lower than Blindsight).

I think the vampires are done quite well. Enough explained and enough left unexplored to provide a good base for strong characters. The whole pseudo-mind control thing in Echopraxia was getting a bit ridiculous but I can accept it given how insanely smart vampires are meant to be.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how he'll wrap up the trilogy in the final book. Things are pretty dire for humans at this point. But I think that's what Watts is going for, in that the real struggle is between vampires and Rorschach, not humans and vampires/rorschach/transhuman collectives/anything else.

Warning major spoiler: Poor Valerie :( all she wanted was to have a conversation with someone as smart as she was and then Rorschach goes and does THAT to her. What a cunt, I hope Rorschach gets what's coming to him for skewering my vampire waifu.

The neologisms, moonslang and colloquialisms are impenetrable and not in an interesting way, but rather in a very tryhard kind of way. Moreover the characters are all very unlikable and weird. Revenger seems to be Reynolds' only book that tries to be young adult, even though he doesn't get all the YA tropes right. It is a bad first Reynolds book as it is different from all the others. But I don't think it's neo-steampunk garbage, the sci-fi concepts underneath do start to show after a while, even when the book tries to be newcomer friendly and uses terms like "lungstuff" when referring to breathable atmosphere, and swallowers in regards to miniature black holes that provide gravity to small planetoids. The book does ramp up towards the end though.
I'd say try House of Suns, or some other standalone of his, if you are interested in good sci-fi.
