I'm something of a brainlet reading philosophy. I don't claim it makes me smart compared with the layman or especially real intellectuals, but it does make me better able to construct arguments.

It makes me smartER, not smart.

>> No.11180848

>>11179096
I don't know what constitutes being 'smart', but for the sake of the argument let it be called: being able to think.

Reading is not a simple process of the transmission of meaning instituted by signs on a page. Reading is always a complicated process of prying forth meaning through the personal engagement of the reader. What can be taken from a text is thus always contingent on the reader's horizon, as well as his way of reading, the style or modality of the act of reading you could say.

You can read the entire canon of western philosophy, memorize Kant's categories and the distinctions of Hegel's logic and still not be a thinker. The essence of philosophy is not to be found in concepts or systems, but in the questions. And to actually step into the realm of the philosophical is to take these questions and the uncertain path of reflection upon yourself. To get anything out of reading philosophy thus requires a modality of reading that pries into the unwritten, that asks toward the Ursprung of the text from a wonder/bewilderment, a question.

In other words, to actually learn philosophy is to make the questions of philosophy a personal concern and take responsibility of this concern. But in the institution today, large quantities of students as well as (some) professors treat their tradition in this misguided view, where they view it as a 'craft' we learn from memorizing concepts, systems and logical categories in order to be able to 'think'. The result is too often thoughtless academic dribble. A lot of academic philosophers do not know how to think.

Apparently reading philosophy gives you the power to instantly know peoples' IQ just by looking at them too. Or maybe it's just confirmation bias and narcissism. Nah probably the other thing, that's way more flattering to the ego.
