Hard to say. I had a base of like, high school spanish/middle school Spanish and a year abroad in college.

If you also have a base knowledge of the grammar and core vocabulary, it'd be in your interest to read a work in translation and then reread it in Spanish so you don't have to worry about narrative or characters.

I did Savage Detectives as that's my favorite book. You could do it with something smaller like a novella. I think Vargas Llosa's prose is fairly simple, La fiesta del chivo wouldn't be all that difficult although it's also like 500 pages.

Thank god even my naive self knew my diploma would be worthless (much less my overall score) so I never spent an extra second worried about improving my grade in these classes. The rest of the course was fucking excellent and 100% practical, these little irrelevant theory-only credit-filler classes should be banned at this stage of education, especially when they are based off French and Spanish postmodernist trash.
