this.

The sensation of monsterousness or the demonic happens inside of us. It's what gives things their significance, or maybe it is the significance.

Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.

monsters do exist, they just look like humans.
That's why Tolkien was such a genius, he wrote a story that took place on Earth, but one where the monster that lives within people was reflected on the outside, visible for all.

I would really disagree that things would be worse if we lived in a world with actual monsters. There would be a higher chance of death and physical pain, sure. But there's no chance we would be living in this nightmarish hellworld of hedonism and complacency, in which we all sit around shitting our pants and getting spoonfed garbage that rots our brains and deteriorates our souls. The constant threat would lead to unity, virtuous ideals, and active participation in the world. I would rather risk getting killed in a world worth fighting for than living comfortably in this bland degenerate shitheap.

The world is ruled by techno-economical machines of our own making. Our choice is to fight them or convince ourselves that they are of natural origin. As long as you dream about monsters of the past you will be unable to confront the monolithic demons haunting both present and future. If you dare you might even shed your kaczinskyan pessimisim and try to tame them to your will.
