It's gotta be something by the French. I was reading Karl Reinhold recently and he was talking about the application of Scottish common sense philosophy in Germany and France, and he said, in Germany among real philosophers it has been mostly salutary because it has pulled them away from navel-gazing rationalism, back into obvious facts of consciousness like the reality of perception and empirical experience, and thereby cleared the ground for real philosophy. But in France, it has become a justification for all kinds of godless social engineering, nihilism, complete disrespect for human freedom, self-respect and freedom. Similarly when Humboldt visited France ca. 1800 he said that they have no sense whatsoever of a "self," it's a purely mechanistic conception of human life.

If you actually read French Enlightenment philosophy, it's bewilderingly bad. They have no sense of the individual whatsoever. All of their philosophy is premised on the idea that humans are just generated from sense perceptions, that the only purpose of life is "harmonious" living that maximises happiness between humans in a society. So naturally, all the philosophy is concerned with is how we should engineer humans to be the best termites possible. It's unbelievably degenerate. Pleasure, libertinism, no higher virtues or values. It's prototype Americanism.
