alright so apparently no one wants to have a serious harry potter discussion, but i want to have one, so i will start.

if you read some of the writings on jk rowlings's web site, you'll see that she actually thought out many of the otherwise throwaway details of the books. there's an interesting article she wrote about the types of wood that make up each main character's wand.

but i am just so frustrated about her putting all that effort into those aspects of the story, which only the hardcore fans are likely to catch, but why the actual plot of book 7 is so mediocre.

I like the idea of writing other series based on the other houses of Hogwarts, with the moral relating to each houses ideals. So like the HP series revolved around bravery, a ravenclaw series could be about intelligence, a hufflepuff series could be about being a pussy etc

I actually think it's worse than all that. It's not simply that Rowling put a weak plot (later books) in an immersive world. It's that she put thought into strangely arbitrary and myopic parts of her world. She thought out wands, but not how education works in the rest of the world, or how wizards can know so little about the muggles they live next door to. Things that were charming about the wizarding world became cumbersome as she tried to expand her universe.

Also, anyone else find that you enjoyed the books less once it started getting into the actual "plot" with voldemort and whatever? The best bits I found were just about them being at school, going to class, stressing over exams/quidditch. You know, stuff I could relate to as a kid.

Here's something I've always wondered about.

You know how each country has its own Ministry of Magic thing? Was Voldemort planning on conquering the entire wizard world or just Great Britain? Would wizard populations of other nations band together and form a coalition to stop him from gaining more power if his overthrow had been successful? What did wizards from other countries think Voldemort's rise and fall?

The idea of international wizard relations is fascinating to me.

I always asked myself: Why do they have such crazy laws in Britain? Seriously, dark magic isn't forbidden, that alone isn't a bad thing. What is crazy is their mentality. You allow dark magic, okay, but at the same time you say everyone who is interested in the dark arts is a bad person. Normal people will naturally react in rejecting the dark arts but people like Voldemort and his followers have an open access to the dark arts.
It's like saying you are aloud to buy weapons whenever you want but the rest of the society will view you as a criminal for it. That's dumb.
Either you forbid them completly or you make them avaible for everyone like in Hungary, the way in the middle is the dumbest possibility.

Probably forbidding them for everyone except Aurors would be the best way. Yes, of course there will still be dark magicans so that wouldn't be a perfect solution but 1. he couldn't get a big followship and 2. it would be fewer. There must be tons of them, look at Mad-Eye, all his scars, his missing leg, his missing eye, he must have fought with pretty many dark magicans and there are many aurors and I assume that most dark magicans never fight with a Auror since they are disguised. Theremust be pretty many.
A society with very few dark magicans >A society with dark magicans only(like in Hungary) > A society with many dark magicans in disguise(Britain).
It's just the dumbest possibility.
But hey it's just a book and probably I just don't see a point.
