God gives these afflictions to the one's he loves the most. Look at people who have not suffered. They hollow, ungrateful and self-centered. It is not a condemnation of his material wealth but his self-centered, comfortable life. The comfortable life of ease caused him to fill his soul with possessions instead of what is important to God. Life is more than meat, life is more than comfort.

Pretty much this. God is loving and yet terrible suffering occurs. How do we reconcile this? I'm not sure we know how to. Evil in the world does not mean God is evil or imperfect. I struggled with thoughts like yours but the analogy of the vase helped me reconcile fall from goodness and God's omnipotent goodness. This analogy is basically based off St Augustine's apologies I'd suggest reading the Confessions by him to better grasp how evil in the world and God can be reconciled.
