yes, but to balance things out a bit i also don't believe an amateur critic should be holding their subjects to the same standard a professional should.

For publishing, the standard is generally that you're a little bit harsher to newcomers and want a clear market the work can be sold to. Once you get a following, you're given some leeway.
As a consumer, I mean, have whatever fucking standard you want. But if you want to be helpful to the writer in terms of giving advice, just tell them their biggest faults.
