im 19 and i have been looking for a good book or series of books to read. some friends recommended the harry potter series. I mentioned that these books would probably be too childish for me to be interested in them. is the series worth reading or am i better off searching in another direction?

Go for it. I'm nineteen. I read these books all the damn time. Started reading them when i was, what, 8? 10, maybe. Haven't stopped. Love them so much.
Another series that I've read was the Series of Unfortunate Events. Seems childish, but if you have a dry sense of humor, then they're awesome.

yea, not really trying to troll any one. just wondering whether or not this series would be enjoyable for someone of my age. I have heard that the books become more mature as you read more into the series.

They do.

They become more mature in theme. The writing becomes more childish.

The writing remains the same. The serious tone merely reveals how childishly written the books really are. Earlier on the tone was childish, so it was not as jarring.

Good point. I never actually went back to re-read the first few.

HEY

STOP READING ABOUT WIZARDS

BE A MAN AND READ THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO BY KARL MARX

I did.

I like to pretend that the series ends at 4.

From there, the books become unmitigated angsty teenager dick-waving.

This...
Don't get me wrong, they're definitely worth a read! Some people keep reading them ooovvverrrr and over again but once was enough for me!

They aren't the pinnacle of literature but they aren't bad by any means of the word.

it's good kids lit. she's a better author than plenty of other popular writers (read: Dan Brown). there is better kids lit, though--madeline l'engle or phillip pullman.

i think i agree with the guy who posted that the books get worse after #4, but i don't know if i was just young and my taste got better
