If you're looking for concrete examples of the 'spectacle', you're misinterpreting what it actually means for man to substitute his idea of society for its superstructural model. People have idealisations regardless of capitalism. Even in capitalism where what was once genuine is being 'offered' by something synthetic can still have a subjective, practically illusory and distinct purpose to an individual. He's just applying a human habit to something that is far younger in the human experience.
