I want to read a good book which plays in medieval Europe. I read Narcissus and Goldmund years ago and enjoyed it quite much.

So I wonder, are there any other good books, especially interested if it plays in the time of the Black Death.

The name of the rose. Can't recommend it highly enough, it's a highly literate detective story by Umberto Eco set in a 14th century abbey.

The Distant Mirror by Barabara Tuchmann is a non-fiction history book about this period, but very very readable.

The Temptation of St. Anthony is neither medieval nor european, but it's monkish enough to qualify.

Marguerite Yourcenar, The Abyss, aka Zeno of Bruges.
Set at the end of medieval era, same mood than Narcissus and Goldmund.

Well shit, if we're putting goddamn Timeline on the list I'll say the Cadfael books aren't bad.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Decameron by Boccaccio.

Just for clarification, OP, are you looking for lit written in the medieval period or something that takes place in that time, or perhaps both?

As far as Medieval lit it is true the all the works of Boccaccio are great. I do love Arthurian lit as well, especially pre-Mallory, like Sir Gwain and the Green Knight and Lanval.

Also, of course there is Chauser as well, though I prefer the untranslated or the translated versions which do not preserve his rhyme schemes, especially for "House of Fame". "The Divine Comedy" is another, rightly, famous work. "Metamorphisis" by Ovid is a classical Latin work that was heavily influential on virtually all the Medieval writers.

Asian literature of the time is also interesting: "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is great. "Water Margin" and "Journey into the West" are good too.

Yeah, so if you want more medieval lit ideas just ask.

He wants books set in medieval Europe. That's why he mentions Narcissus and Goldmund.

Everyone should read Candide; it is an excellent short picaresque made of lulz.
