Blacks don't write well. Frederick Douglass is a poor author. His book is a first-hand account of a slave's experience, so it has historical merit, but that doesn't mean it has literary merit.

As far as poetry is concerned, Dickinson and Elizabeth Browning are good I suppose. But Literature? Women don't write literature.
