I don't know much about it. I read in one of Evola's books on mountain climbing that he really liked the surrealist book "Mount Analogue: A Novel of Symbolically Authentic Non-Euclidean Adventures in Mountain Climbing" by René Daumal. If you like mountaineering and esoterism, maybe you will like that.

It was quite good in its early days before they all became overly-politicised in their little fanatical cults. Desnos is one of the more pure surrealists, in his manner of working and living--read Essential Poems and Writings and the book about him by Katherine Conley. Aragon is probably the most erudite, and in some respects the best technical writer--read Paris Peasant. Breton is the most sentimental, the one who's heart is most in it, exemplified especially in his later works such as Arcanum 17--read Andre Breton Selection edited by Mark Polizotti

Its not as interesting as Dadaism imo. Surrealism is, ironically, the formalisation of Dadaism. The lattter was closer to "pure psychic automatism" and was more intense, critical, insightful and avant-guard than surrealism ever was.

See Tzara's manifesto for Dadaism.

Are there any good surrealist works in english? In your opinion, how well do the translations hold up?
