For every one person reading fanfiction online, there are ten writing it.

Does that sound about right?

well, it sounds like an insult to fanfic typers.

so its fine by me.

I read A LOT of fanfic.
It's my secret shame.
But yeah there's a thick layer of dross to sive through until you get to good stuff.
I never write amy though.

okay I should go to bed when my typing gets this bad.

I read fanfic from time to time. Mostly for the porn though. Most non-porn fanfics aren't well written compared to the original thing, and they don't have anything (ie porn) to keep my attention. :/

SHAME

You are qualified to offer me advice on an aggrievance: I write porn, but am not sure where the best place to post it is.

Currently I put stuff on adultfanfiction.net, but I'm getting an increasingly bad feeling that the site's heavily-biased towards homosex. And literotica just gives me a bad vibe because it looks like it's fallen through a time-warp from 1996.

Where do you go to read such filth?

Porn almost makes fanfics laudable.

Almost.

I would advise sticking with adultfanfiction

yeah, it's a little homo-heavy, but that's only because it's part of the fanfiction community and the fanfiction community (for a lot of reasons) leans towards being interested in dudes fuckin'. you might want to find some kind of personal site to host it on as well tho (this is the function that livejournal usually serves in the fanfiction community)

i suppose i should, in passing, say that i don't really read fanfiction - i read porn fanfiction to get off, and i am interested in fan fiction in a kind of an anthropological way, but that's about it

I'll say. I was scrolling down the list of submissions after I'd posted mine, and I'd say a good third of all submissions were under the "M/M" category.

It also leads to a possibly very surprising conclusion that more women read porn stories than guys.

This is not actually surprising, at all. In general, it's a truism that more women than men read erotic fiction. In general, men are more interested in straight-up porno, women pay more attention to things like stories. There's a lot of psychological explanations for this but it's a good general rule.

More generally, the fanfiction community (of which AFF is a part) is strikingly female-oriented. It is female dominant. In fact, it could be argued that this is more or less the female form of 'geekiness' - being a geek is something that actually is really strongly connected to gender (cf. "'Why Be Normal?': Language and identity practices in a community of nerd girls", Mary Bucholtz), and where things like 4chan or what have you are rather male dominant, the whole fanfiction / livejournal / etc is really really really female dominant. vide the recent poll on fandom secrets where something like 95% of respondents identified as female.

so, given that this is erotic literature coming from the fan fiction community, it is not at all surprising that the majority of users of AFF would be female.

like i say, my main interest in fanfiction is anthropological.

Good god

There is no place for hot girl-on-girl action in the world of fapfiction then :/

I write/read fanfiction, although recently I haven't found much of anything worth reading and I'm not working on particular projects with any sort of diligence.

I don't read/write porn or any of that ridiculous fangirl slash bullshit. When I was in high school I did for a time, but it got boring and I grew out of it. Now I focus on plot and occasionally romance without smut. Shocking, I know.
