There are more intellectuals now than ever; it's just that their recognition is limited to other thinkers in their field.
Many of the most popular current figures are more popularizers than public intellectuals, but people like Susskind and Sapolsky are legitimate authorities in their fields; they just don't have the same level of popularity as your Shapiros and JBPs.
Peterson's done much-cited academic studies, but it's all in fucking personality psychology, so it doesn't count at all.
