intellectuals are receding into hiding. there are none here, not even me. intellectuals know it's dangerous to be a real intellectual now. you're either controlled opposition or a target. those people are not representative of contemporary thinkers.

Those intellectuals are the necessary outcome of the teachings of Deleuze, Foucault and many others of their time. I absolve Whitehead of any responsibility though.

they either committed suicide, became homeless heroin addicts, or died fighting for a doomed rebellion in some god-forgotten country nobody's ever heard of

Internet.

There's a generation who had a misstep; they went from an analog world to a digital one. Their brains couldn't adapt quickly enough and now their most potent thoughts and ideas get decimated by the ADD-inducing mania of the internet-world. They're slowly coming out of it, but if they're over the age of 30, odds are they won't get over it fast enough.

The slightly younger generation, though, has a chance to move past it. To wield the internet without succumbing to it. It's potently obvious in Gen Y: a burgeoning intellectual community that is evading every attempt to define or capitalize on them. When they hit their 20s, the world's gonna shift.

It's also possible for Gen Z, who are now in their twenties. They gained the internet somewhere during their development, and though many rely on it, they are trying to escape it, even now. But it won't be a natural overcoming, like their Gen Y counterparts. They must willingly choose to put down their phones and make a mark in the world, or else waste away in the digital graveyard of half-assed ideas and directionless debates.

>It's potently obvious in Gen Y: a burgeoning intellectual community that is evading every attempt to define or capitalize on them.
What are you talking about specifically?

>> No.13304467

Despite the fact that evade defining?
The foremost example I can think of is Soph. Obviously a bright kid, doesn't drink the proverbial kool-aid. Dares to make a video with reasonable arguments and internet-humor. Immediately branded as dangerous and kicked off of the community.
I can't think of other examples from the public eye, but I can't help but think of my nieces. A pair each from different mothers, all four of them raised together. They are Smart. Scary-smart. Three years ago they were in grade school, positively glued to their phones. All their friends were, too. This past spring, they're about to enter high school, and they rarely looked at their phones. They spoke with elocution, they stood tall and looked you in the eye. They were unafraid to ask questions.
Their parents, on the other hand (my cousins, not technically "nieces" but it's a more apt description) were just like the rest of us. By which I mean- any time mundane conversation turned to something of note, some conceptual or ideological realm, out come the devices to check the "facts". Discussion over.

This is, of course, just my observation. The internet was supposed to revolutionize human consciousness, not turn into what it has. But I think it still can: it just takes a few generation for it to become ubiquitous. I really am optimistic about the future.

(oh, one last thing: remember that worldwide student-environmentalism protest? That's the sort of thing I'm hopeful about.)

the idea that environmentalism is a ploy to abuse market values is not only prevalent, but entirely untrue. Immoral people take advantage of genuine efforts, which makes it seem true, but legitimate action needs to be taken.
But this is not an environmentalism thread, is it?

They probably took their teachers at their word because high schoolers lack the capacity to do rigorous scientific research.

It's not their fault, you're obviously not trying hard enough. Also, not every single piece of philosophy has to be groundbreaking. These aren't paradigm shifters, no one is. But don't worry, there are real geniuses out there (me desu), and as soon as I release my 2300 page masterpiece I'll be one of the greats for sure.

great!

Internet is just one big sandbox for multiple experiments on mass psychology.
Only real advancement would be what Elon musk is working on.
