People suck, yes. However I think unrealistic expectations plays a part in it too. we're all composed at least partly of shit, its in nature of the human condition to be poopy now and again. So even though the statistical chances of meeting someone who "isn't" a piece of shit are incredibly small, the notion of an entirely shitless human being has no basis in reality.

I'm not saying that more pessimism will help, but with a little effort you can practise a more positive form of pessimism whereby expecting the worst leads you to be perpetually and pleasantly surprised about any particular rare moment of kindness or genuine affection. You're going to take more from the good than if you always think the best of people, because your expectations are already so low that everything becomes a net positive.
