13618048 No.13618048 [Reply] [Original]

In 8 hours time I'll wake up and go to church for the first time in 7/8 years. I've been reading a lot of moldbug, pro-monarchy stuff and XIst century European history. The idea popped in my head out of the blue today and now I'd like to see what I can get out of it.
Am I being dumb or will it prove to be a positive experience?
I'm also looking for a book about catholicism related to topics of interest in neoreactionary/monarchist thought. Please and thank you

i'm seconding this anon but much less pessimistic.
i've gone to church my whole life, my dad is a pastor, my grandfather and great-grandfather were pastors; educated people don't typically go to church and people certainly don't go to church to be educated in any sort of academic sense.

that being said i have a profound and humbling respect for religious institutions. its the only place a lot of people can go to be accepted as they are and express true vulnerability, true shame, true grace, and true meditation on forgiveness and love. church is for offering common people a place of solace, a sense of real community, focus on improving or repairing themselves, and just a reminder that God loves them, that they love each other, and that despite the struggles and the downfalls, everything is going to be alright because we all fall short, together.

if you want to study religion take a class. church is for doers, not thinkers.

i should probably follow this up by saying i haven't gone to church regularly in a few years(i visit my dad's church when there's an event that involves free food) and i'm protestant.
Catholicism, as academically and theologically essential as it is, is a bit sterile in practice.

I was going to try to find statistics to counter this assumption but I cannot find any. Do you have any verifiable source behind this claim? If priests aren't more likely to commit sexual assaults than most other occupations I would like to see the some numbers.

An author in particular i'd look into is CS Lewis. Also Chesterton even though i haven't read much of his.
Also this book should be on topic https://www.amazon.com/Why-America-Needs-Religion-Discontents/dp/0802841627 but you probably can read a review without buying it. Here's a good one http://home.earthlink.net/~peter.a.taylor/lewy.htm

I was in the same position a few years ago, had saturated myself in traditionalist, anti-modernity texts, and got all gung ho about going to church to stick it to the libs. But I found that church didn’t really have anything to do with what I was into. “What? They are preaching love and egalitarianism and not monarchy and the smiting of heretics?! Cucks!”

Of course, a big part of the problem was that I had already became so insufferably contrarian that I couldn’t sit there in the pew without criticizing every damned thing around me: the congregation, the pastor, the building, the decor, the sermon. It was like that my feet hurt wojack meme.

Even though i feel like I’ve grown out of that mindset, I still don’t go to church. I just couldn’t drum up any belief in any of it.

I dunno. Some form of pessimistic Epicureanism, i.e. the world is going to shit, but so what, might as well be as comfy as possible in the meantime. I’ve devoted my life to avoiding work as much as possible, and enjoying myself as much as I can. Outright hedonism is a slippery slope, but luckily I’m not into drugs or anything and my pleasures are for the most part pretty harmless.

Basically I want to take it easy until I die at a ripe old age, and there has never been a better time in human history for this.

When I went to church after mass everyone shook each others hand and said god bless you. They then invited me to have tea or coffee and some biscuits. Keep in mind I was crying during the service so when everyone treated me nicely I felt like the top of the world. I'll highly recommend it. You won't meet any girls however everyone is in there 60's. But maybe the sexagenerians have cute grand daughters that you could meet.

I don't even have the words for what a pathetic faggot you are. Instead of immersing yourself in the desert fathers, or Christian Mysticism, or really ANYTHING of value, after (probably correctly) identifying shortcomings in modern worship, you decide to hang up your hat and kick back. Your beliefs meant nothing, and the only respectable thing you've said is that you were a contrarian, because at least that was the truth. I would be embarrassed and ashamed looking in the mirror every single morning if I were you. You can't even commit to being a full-on degenerate. Even THAT takes some kind of stance.
