When you say "read", do you mean read and forget three months later or "read" as in taking notes, making annotations and putting parts you like in your dedicated notebook?

Stick to reading great works. Avoid trashy genre fiction or meme of the month NYRB stuff.

You get to both write down your favorite parts and add your own thoughts, on what happened on your own life or what happens in the news you can correlate to what you read. It's a great thing to do.

Honestly I should do it with every book but it's hard when you read in bed.

I know this feel. I read slowly and have an annoying eye problem that makes things more difficult to concentrate on for long periods.

That being said I don’t really see the issue if you retain the things you read. The only comparison I can think of is going to the gym: the most important thing is that you’re actually trying. It’s not a competition unless you want to compete against yourself.

The reading journal idea sounds cool. The only time I’ve done stuff like that outside of school was with As I Lay Dying. I had to make a family tree so I can follow along better. Other times I’ve done lots of vocab builder notes but that can become tedious and distract you from the experience of the book, etc.

this was a tradition at cambridge, having a notebook where you made references to stuff u read so u could find it later. i think the tradition makes a lot of sense from so many perspectives
