The narrative of his stories is almost impossible to follow. I'm reading "The case of Charles Dexter Ward" and by page 10 I was already lost.
Is Lovecraft the ultimate /lit/ casual filter?

Yes. If they think HPL was a good writer, they're casuals.

Lovecraft can be particularly hard for non-English speakers, or at least for those who don't speak it as a first language.

English is my second language. I understand everything he writes, but following the plot is extremely difficult for me. I don't thing it's a matter of language. I think he just writes in a way that's hard to follow

yeah, he's hard to follow, read using a pencil, just draw a line on the side of things that look important to the plot, you can erase them when you're done. Reading a second time I notice a lot of foreshadowing and underline lines with hidden meanings, the ones I like with context, I don't erase them usually unless I write em down somewhere, I like using them for reference when visiting a book a third time to expand on them.

anyway critical reading pro tip but hpl imo sucks, there is just a lowkey snotty undertone to his work and it bugs me, editors are important sometimes, the publishing industry sucks but that's one thing they got right, some people need a seperate editor.

I know what you mean. It's like he wants to show the reader how ample his vocabulary is

>> No.13942030

I can't believe this guy wrote popular fiction that ran in low brow editorials because a good deal of his writing is fucking impenetrable.

His longer works are horrible, but his shorts are great. The longest work of his that’s still good is Call of Cthulhu. Anything longer than that is sure to be awful.

Lovecraft's writing is part of his appeal. Its his way of inculcating the reader into another world which mirrors ours but reveals the darker pits of reality. Its really rewarding once you get into it. Ive seen famous writers do tributes and pastiches but none of them can recreate Lovecraft.

Unfortunately Lovecraft has been turned into a brand and its quite tiresome to see people who have no patience apporach his work. They can stick to movies and video games if they want but dont claim thats where Lovecrafts ideas are better suited.

I am a brainlet with a slightly above average vocabulary (for an american). I never had any issues with readability from Lovecraft.

>> No.13944656

What the fuck is this thread? I was able to comprehend his works easily when I was a teenager. I had to look up a few words sometimes, but nothing more than that. He was obviously attempted to write in a slightly archaic style, but if you can read earlier writers like Poe, who is more difficult, you should have no problem with Lovecraft at all.
