A part of it is obviously the harsh message that we're fucked if we don't change stuff but surely there is more than reaffirming phobia of change, what makes climate change denial so successful outside of Burgerland?

Even in Sweden, Germany and Canada it's still not considered as cut as clear as it really is. Besides pretty much any far right party in Europe jumped on the denial or scepticism train and some trend around the 10-15% mark.

Here in the NL all the right of centre parties were cheering on the farmers when they were protesting against nitrogen restrictions, it is sufficiently politicized that people are able to explain it away by connecting it to the perceived left wing fanatasism. Politicizing it is definitely a factor too, although the irony of so called conservatives not giving a fuck about conserving the environment is just too much. And seems there is a missed opportunity there. If you won't reach somer boomer with messages about Indians dying in floods or polar bears kicking the bucket, pointing out to them that their village will look vastly different too could get the point across.
