Olny women do this, they clog themselves with so much shit they can't read anything they don't highlight. Real intelectuals use a bic pencil to annotate and build a second index in the cover page.

Personally I keep my annotations for any book in my journal. Because I find it distasteful to mark up books. On the other hand philosophy books make sense to highlight and take notes in as I find it easier to reference quickly and that the material is meant to be absorbed differently.

Simple as a toast: I mark shit i feel is useful and i add the thing and the page number in the cover page. If i want to build a thread of thought of the author on a specific matter, i use roman or normal letters to mark and write in the other side of the page. Basically Mortimer Adler's method of annotation, if anything i can say to you as a stranger on the internet is: re-read his book, it.

Every great writer whose personal collection I’ve had a chance to look at, whether digitally or in person, has always extensively notated the books in their personal library. You do t have to do gay highlighters and shot but preserving the books for the sake of having them in pristine condition is a consumer cuck move. The purpose of my library is to make my mind greater, not to look pretty.

Well that’s disgusting. I do, however, mark pages with stars in the upper hand corners so I can find key quotes when I come back later. Further, I write in margins and at the bottom of pages, usually just a scrawled note to jog my memory. I also bracket, box and underline phrases and words.

How the fuck else are you supposed to write on a book? You need these notes. Also it’s quite nice to see your old notes from years ago

All of you are degenerate. Anyone who so much as TOUCHES a book sullies it forever. True intellectuals study literature without even touching a page. They are masters of the written word, using force of will to read, they have broken through the mundanities of corporeal existance.

And by that I mean that they scroll through google books and read every 3rd page for about 30 pages until the sample ends.

Not the other anon, but what do you mean by "the thing"? Wouldn't a long passage take too much space? My idea of an index would be indexing by a key concept (e.g., virtue, friendship, etc) and then underlining (or adding asterisks) to passages in the pages where the concept is mentioned.
