Canada is completely insignificant by the numbers compared to world population (35 million compared to 7.5 billion)
If you consider the frequency of great philosophers, how many were there in the 20th century? Like 10 at the most.
The chances of one of those landing in a low population developing nation without much history, are near zero. The majority of the country is a waste land, and we eagerly flee it once the chance to live in a better city/climate presents itself, ie America.
Also our culture is largely low brow and practical, obsessed with sports and outdoor activity
I live in a city that is a complete cultural cesspit
a grey and dull bugman slog, with no grand projects beyond their hockey and football teams with all our business trickling in based on American franchises
our national identity is completely arbitrary
muh maple leaf
muh diversity

Our problem isn’t a poverty of literature, its a poverty of literary culture.
Canada’s literary culture consists of sixty year old women reading decent, but safe, novels, and talking about it in their community libraries and coffee shops.
Most young people here who aren’t just status chasing immigrants actually do take an interest in poetry, politics, history and so on, but there’s not much infestructure to do much with it. Our publishing houses mostly stick to bland local-historical pulp novels and we don’t have any literary magazines of worth.
Online Canadians probably talk amongst themselves more than any country in the world about their (lack of) literary culture and national pride. All this seems to speak to the great lack of it more than any thing.
France and America are literary superpowers in part because they toot their own horn a lot. They have powerful publishing houses which promote authors, and occasionally some of those authors are good. What do we have?
Personally I live in Vancouver and the majority of the people here don’t even speak english as their first langauge. All the locals, with deep roots to the history and geography, live in small towns and are forced to talk about their grandiose realizations about Canadian culture and identity through 4chan and reddit.
We’re a country full of secessionists and romantics, with a potential that I think weighs on the back of every Canadian who takes an interest in arts and letters, but as long as our cities are international centers of finance without any connection to the countryside, and our journals and magazines consist of turgid gossip, and our politics consist of half-ironically copy and half-ironically reacting to whatever political craze is gripping the usa, I don’t see how we can develop a cultre

419 is about a daughter of a boomer going to nigeria to get his retirement money back after he falls for a scam and kills himself. Satisfying ending

Shoe on the Roof is about a spergo med student trying to proove to three schitzos that think they're all jesus that it's not possible to get back at his ex gf

Canada is a great place to live in terms of chillness. No one gives a shit what you do really, just don't be a dick.

I've travelled to Europe and South America a lot, headed to Japan next year. There is definitely a lack of discernible culture here but for the melting pot of multiculturism I have hope that something good will come with more time.

We're a young country but I think we're stepping up on the world stage to show how developed countries should behave.

That's just a self evident circular reason then. "We cure them with the cure." Of course. But to me, the cure is not personal. It is the sickness of the economy, the political, the moral, the social, and so forth, whatever you wish to call it, there is no personal therapy which would be good to someone other than some form of buddhism.

Middle class people may have a naive view on the poor and see them as mere victims. But poor people do not see so clearly what its like to be in the middle class. It is vacuous, decadent, spiritually empty. Our goal should not be to get every person that is poor to merely be a part of this too.

Hugh Maclennan is a great writer if you enjoy more character oriented, situation driven plots.

He accurately reflects the doldrums and common personality archetypes found in a lot of Eastern Canadian media, and uses third-party narratives and seemingly unclear events and stories that are so often orally dictated in his novels to eschew facts laid down earlier in his story-lines. Maclennan remains one of the golden boys of Canadian literature due to his engrossingly realistic portrayal of sensible human disasters.

Yes they're strange. But why do they exist? No, a better question would be.. how could they exist. Isn't being a man or a woman essential to human being? Aren't these things locked up tightly by our hormones? And yet, trannies simply do exist, they modify their bodies so drastically that they do somehow change their gender. I mean.. those trannies, they're certainly not woman, woman can carry a child. Yet, they are certainly not men. Man is not just someone born with a pair of balls and reaches some age. I have a hard time even calling some söyboy sort, cowardly, deathly anxious, unsure, believing in nothing, certainly not himself, and does nothing but follow instruction. Go to school, do as your boss says, consume latest product. Your girlfriend wants an open relationship where she sleeps around and all you do is spend more nights alone? Sure! That's no man is it.

What you will notice now is that gender is not just biological is it? It is a performance, it is a role. Yet, there is nothing wrong with performing a role. We would be utterly lost without at least some categorization. Socialization, work, play, they need categories. Man and woman, human and animal, engineer and doctor.. What is a world without any categories? Without ANY metaphysics? It makes no sense because language is metaphysical.

So, what are we left with? We are at a metaphysical crisis because we do not know how to really believe in metaphysics anymore. We only believe in the physical. You are guilty of this anon. You think a bit too much Ben Shapiro don't you? "Well... actually trannies make no sense because of our DNA!!" But I showed you how untrue that is. Being a man is as much a metaphysical category as male. You dont get to just be a man by having balls and you know it.

This in lies the reconciliation of trannies. The tranny is guilty of not believing in the physical. No matter how ugly and manly they appear they say "I am a woman!!" Ha! How we laugh at this. Yet.. the reactionary has desecrated the metaphyiscal. We see they know this when a tranny passes very well, and is, dare I say it? Kinda hot. Their brains break. They go "oh, yeah I guess i'd MISTAKE them for a woman if I didn't know better.."

You will never get rid of trannies like you will never get rid of metaphysics or physics. You are stuck, and denying this is idiocy. Your goal should not be to lament at their existence, or to try and beat them into submission. You should be trying to get them to understand the physical is just as real as the metaphysical.

I'm currently writing an epic whereby Right Honourable Justin Trudeau confronts his last intersectionality: his Hoserism.
He gives up the prime minister's office to his wife to journey on an epic trot across the Empire of Hosers to find the struggles of the forgotten social justice warriors, those abandoned to small towns and seal clubbing villages of the north. A Drag Queen Inuit becomes his mentor as he whitefaces into the transabled being of Terry Fox.

I have always lived in Winnipeg.

It has been said above that culture is a result of suffering and anguish which I largely agree with. I believe our lack of a distinct culture is because we were a part of the empire until relatively recently, meaning that Anglo-Canadians identified as British more so than anything else. Likewise the Quebecois presumably identified as such, as opposed to British, given their unique heritage.

Euros have had centuries to establish their own culture. The states too developed a distinct culture centuries before we were independent and have therefore had the time to write great novels and postulate the nature of what America means.

Since we are so young and have been so successful and safe and peaceful etc. we have not had any event that necessitated us defining our culture such as a great war. We fought in ww1&2 but it was more just helping our friends than actually fighting in the name of our country. The revolutionary and civil wars entrenched the values of the United States within their history and have influenced the development of their culture. Our only comparisons are the War of 1812 and the Red River Rebellion which established the modern dynamic between Quebec and Ontario, and Ontario and the West respectfully. Our only stresses have been civil and have therefore not prompted any cultural uniformity by my estimation.

Not sure how coherent this is but I hope you can all take something useful away from it.

should also add that this prompts regional identification more so than a national one. For instance BC, Prairies, ON, QC, Maritimes, and the North all seem like distinct cultural regions with little uniformity but significant similarity.

Perhaps we will echo the fate of the Greek city states and our disunity will be our downfall.

For the record most people in Winnipeg don't even feel that close of a tie to AB and SK given how radically conservative they are (by Canadian standards). We also don't feel too tied to Ontario. It is pretty strange being from Manitoba, I imagine farmers here feel like westerners while people up north and on the eastern border feel like Ontarians. But in Winnipeg we just feel Canadian more so than anything else.

Just do whatever brings you joy and don't worry about anything that is out of your control.

And fuck you you defeatist loser. What other country has threads like this, full of anonymous voices, many from the same coastal megacity, arguing and bickering about the lack of culture, great traditions, heroic deeds, and intrigue? Does Switzerland do this? Does Finland? Does Niger? Does France? Does the USA? Does Libya? Denmark is also a literary wasteland, but I've never seen a thread with over two hundred heated replies made arguing about the fact.

We might not have a great literary tradition, but our desire for one is a stronger force than I think anyone here recognizes. If there was ever a fertile soil for a romantic movement, it would be Canada. No other country has the same muted national pride, waiting and wanting to be unleashed.

And the fact that we don't have any traditions is a blessing in disguise. If you ask an American what it means to be one, you'll either get some racist bullshit about "white people" or you'll get some faggy non-answer about tolerance and 'freedom'. It's suffocating being in that country, because you're immediately forced into a reality stemming from several hundred years of unbroken tradition. Yes, some countries are great, and regularly produce great people, but most just produce mediocre sheep. Any Canadian in our generation has the potential of a blank slate. An entire country looking for a direction, a sense of contingency, sources of pride. This is exactly the kind of conditions which don't just produce great artists, but demand great artists. If you can't rise to the challenge then get out of the way.
