I can't do it, /lit/. I just can't fucking do it.

Yeah, Jane Eyre was boring. Yeah, The Savage Detectives was masturbatory. Yeah, Foer's most recent novel was pedantic and amateurish. But this has got to be the worst thing I've ever read. I don't know how this got published. I don't know how anyone cares about this piece of trash. It's a joke that's been perpetrated on readers everywhere.

Fuck this book. Yeah, I'm mad.

I hate it too, but The Savage Detectives was pretty good.

Best trolling in literature.

better than Ethan Frome or A Separate Peace

the prose is extraordinary, no one's been able to describe filth and deviancy in such a poetic and eloquent manner before or since. Yes, it's very uneven, but the moment of sheer brilliance more than make up for the dross.

And for that, I can almost respect Burroughs.

Almost.

Nah. That honor goes to Finnegans Wake.

If you want to keep that little bit of respect then, I don't recommend you read his essay on how Scientology is basically epic (I really enjoyed Naked Lunch btw)

It wasn't sincere. Burroughs thought it was interesting, but bullshit nonetheless.

He had a lot of strange interests didn't he? I have some recordings of some lectures he did with Ginsberg and he talks about some pretty wild stuff.

2deep4u. Seriously. Read some analysis on it and re-read it.

To be fair, I remember reading an analysis on the Steely Dan scene, and although it made perfect sense (capital punishment etc) I don't think I could have extracted that from the text myself.
