It has been same throughout history. Islam wasn't really a big problem until they united. But you are right, same could be said about many people groups and religions.
In west there really isn't problem of islam, as muslims westernise and there is already few other nepotistic religious groups around in Europe, so its nothing new. Few problems that muslims cause could be dealt by police doing their job and application of common sense from public servants, which is unprobable from them.
