>Given all the ways modern life is designed to make us feel untethered, how do we determine who needs a medical intervention versus who is simply in a social rut?

>Just as thirst is a signal that you are dehydrated, loneliness is an indication that you are already suffering from a lack of connection, Stephanie Cacioppo tells me. It’s true that many of us manage to pull ourselves out of a lonely funk, but she argues that we could still benefit from a pharmacological intervention to prevent descent into social isolation.

>The vast majority of people experience loneliness in their lives. I ask her: does this mean all of us could benefit from such a treatment?

Ellul and Ted were right. They put a lot of feelings I could not express into words. I'm not sure if finding out about them actually did me any good, because now I feel less motivation to accept the world as it is.

>Imagine a society that subjects people to conditions that make them terribly unhappy, then gives them drugs to take away their unhappiness. Science fiction? It is already happening to some extent in our own society. It is well known that the rate of clinical depression has been greatly increasing in recent decades. We believe that this is due to disruption of the power process, as explained in paragraphs 59-76. But even if we are wrong, the in-creasing rate of depression is certainly the result of SOME conditions that exist in today’s society. Instead of removing the conditions that make people depressed, modern society gives them antidepressant drugs. In effect, antidepressants are a means of modifying an individual’s internal state in such a way as to enable him to tolerate social conditions that he would otherwise find intolerable.

Ellul:
>None of our wise men ever pose the question of the end of all their marvels. The “wherefore“ is resolutely passed by. The response which would occur to our contemporaries is: for the sake of happiness. Unfortunately, there is no longer any question of that. One of our best known specialists in diseases of the nervous system writes: “we will be able to modify man’s emotions, desires and thoughts, as we have already done in a rudimentary way with tranquilizers.“ it will be possible, says our specialist to produce a conviction or an impression of happiness without any real basis for it. Our man of the golden age, therefore, will be capable of “happiness“ amid the worst privations. Why, then, promise us extraordinary comforts, hygiene, knowledge, and nourishment if, by simply manipulating our nervous system, we can be happy without them? The last meager motive we could possibly ascribe to the technical adventure thus vanishes into thin air through the very existence of technique itself.

I dont tgink loneliness is curable, since it’s Immaterial. There are neurostates correlative to loneliness, but are these not also analogous to other such emotional states? A pill intended to cure ir treat loneliness could only possibly be an inhibitor. Would this not lead to disassociative psychological effects? I really doubt there could be a neurological picture for loneliness and Im confident we dont have one now.

That’s not the cause of loneliness and isolation. A few years ago I was extremely unhappy, I felt very isolated but it would be fair to say that the people around me liked me and supported me.
For a while now I’ve been happier and I know I am much less pleasant to be around, I still have friends but I upset more people; not caring about what other people think to some extent (this is also the literal definition of based) is a good place for happiness to stem from.

This pill is at best, a placebo, at worst it will make things worse in the long run. This is exactly like putting a band-aid on a leaking pipe that is about to burst. Instead of attacking the root of the problem, you think making a pill that will numb the population into passivity and make Big Pharma rich is the solution.

No but they are still qualitatively different pieces of the puzzle. Who exists in those positions does actually have an impact at local levels. From a sufficiently broad perspective of course it all fades out of view and you just see something like the acceleration of techno-capital. A lot of people don't seem to care about that so much as things like 'what will living conditions for my demographic in my country be like in the next 20 years', which actually is impacted by the taskmasters to some degree.
