I only would read him if you're interested in intellectual history. The academy was obsessed with Dr Safe in the 70s/80s so a lot of French philosophy from that period plays off him. To read for himself? Meh. Main point is self liberation and the line because the body and intellectualism is a stupid dichotomy.

I feel like Sade is under-rated as an individual. People meme the 120 Days a lot but the man himself lived a pretty remarkable life -- embarking on multiple prison breaks; locking himself in a chateau for an entire winter with several peasant girls and a squire; having a peasant girl's irate father shoot at him point blank but the gun misfiring; being tried in absentia for "poisoning prostitutes" (later overturned as a miscarriage of justice); being sentenced to death and having an effigy burned in lieu of himself proper; traveling around Europe as a fugitive with his wife's sister; being a judge in the French Revolution and then being deposed and sentenced to death himself because his son was falsely listed as an emigre (and also because his colleagues found his habit of trying to spare people from the death penalty suspicious and too "moderate") and only being saved from the guillotine at the last minute when a group of moderates managed to overthrow Robespierre; being suppressed by three different regimes (monarchy, republic, empire) etc.

Justine is worth reading. It's repetitive both in its depiction of sex, overall plot, and philosophizing in between, but it has a certain charm to it. His philosophy really boils down to some kind of Nietzschean/Redbeardian Will not to power, but to pleasure. There's a remarkable passage in Justine where a father explains at length how he is justified in selling his only daughter into sex slavery, saying she is a product of his creation and therefore he can do with her as he sees fit. You should read De Sade simply because he's such a unique individual in the canon. Completely unapologetic and if it weren't for the confirmed historicity of his actual life, lots of people today would think he was being ironic.

>>14419563
Blanchot seems really abstract and verbose in the French postmodernist style. I think Sade makes his central philosophy pretty clear, it's a form of hardcore hedonism that relishes on breaking moral norms. But I was thinking if there were any other philosophers who had a similar style, seems like he was one of a kind.

I admire his tenacity, and have a portrait of him on my bedroom wall. An interesting narrative near the conclusion of Justine which interested me was how, even in the sudden morality at its conclusion, the acts of evil were still built under a form of reason --- each libertine is subject to moral condemnation and being "guilty" by such a force, but still exist as justified. I also find some of the political aspects in Philosophy in the Bedroom (such as, quite literally, an argument for killing the poor, as well as the entire "Yet Another Effort, Frenchman..." pamphlet) to accompany de Sade's work as a whole: the state of Nature as a domain for power-exchanges, employing everything from birth and murderous demise under their form.

I sorta want to write like a "New Salo", without all the preteen stuff and rape? And make it a comedy. Like, there's a maid who wants to be a toilet, but all the people who do that were immunized before they got to the castle, so she spends the entire 120 days waiting for the doctor to get his shit together and get the vaccines shipped in, and by the time she's had all her shots, the days are up and she goes home a virgin. Or one of the girls is actually a boy, but he goes as two people to get paid double, and ends up having to arrange a match between one of the richfags and himself.

The work "Crimes of Love", I found, introduces his style of storytelling, while also having characteristic themes of sodomy, incest, et cetera. However, if you're interested primarily in the exposition grounding de Sade's ideas, "Philosophy in the Bedroom" is also another route (if you enjoyed the Dialogue, that is). After that, Justine and Juliette (preferably, in order, as I find Juliette to harbor less subtlety) are good points to continue on. Even though I enjoy 120 Days of Sodom, I would likely recommend it last, due to its relatively unfinished state
