It happened the opposite to me. I was expecting a lot more of morbid and grotesque scenes, like the shitfest that modern horror has become, but instead i found vague depictions of ancient and unknown evils that the human mind can't grasp even by looking at. The more i read his work, the more i noticed that this "vagueness" was actually Lovecraft's "thing", but i actually found it very pleasant.
Later i found other books and short stories inspired by Lovecraft's work, but it felt like they relied too much on shock effect, specially in the constant depiction of morbid scenery (for example Robert E. Howard's "The black stone").
I think it's more of a personal thing, if you can't enjoy Lovecraft vagueness you probably aren't going to enjoy most of his work, but you may still want to check out short stories like "celephaïs", "polaris" or "the tree".
