out of all the crap I was forced to read in high school, the first book I really made a connection to was frankenstein. I love bits of philosophy in my books, and the existentialism was amazing and thought-provoking to me.

the parts of the book that didn't have the monster were meh though.

I think Orwell is the best English essayist I've ever read, and his work is massive in scope. A lot of the things I read in there as a kid still come back to me know, years later.

The older I get, the more I think that Orwell may be the best writer in English of the 20th century. His work isn't maybe as flashy as some of the other obvious contenders, but he left his mark on the culture.

I remember thinking how beautiful & understated this book was when I first read it, & learning it's okay to have very muted feelings, whether they're good or bad.

This guy got me thinking the most. He was by far the demon that disturbed me the most.

He introduced me to the concept of subtle, banal evil, far more horrible than anything with big fangs and claws. You knew where you stood with gaping maws and serrated teeth.

When I was 8, Norton Juster introduced my to Nyarlathotep.

I think OP means "the primordial reading that made you who you are today," in which case, "Phantom Tollbooth effected me" is a bit poetical, but i think passes grammarian muster.

Leave and never come back OP.

That book is a trite piece of bullshit.
