If I want to learn latin, do I have to look for classes at some academy or being self taught is enough? Experiences please.

Pic kinda related.

>> No.1487577

I'd recommend classes. Textbooks won't help you actually being able to use the language with other people, and textbooks don't tell you if you've written something incorrectly.

I'm going to learn latin at college this semester. :D

>> No.1487600

For a basic understanding I think you could teach yourself. I took two years of it in college and it was mostly a matter of memorizing vocabulary and all of the conjugations. It's a dead language so there's no need to speak it or write fluently in it. If you're able to translate some shit you know you're getting it right and that's all you really need.

The main character in the book I'm reading learned Latin on his own, and he can't pronounce any of it correctly. The moral? Teach yourself if you have to, but study under someone if you can.
As a side note, this moral is very similar to my motto towards sex.

People who take latin classes.

Hey, I'm not the one learning latin here.

>> No.1487716

Go find a copy of Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata. It's a Latin textbook written entirely in Latin. There's a native language study guide (with tapes) that explain pronunciation and offer native language review of more difficult points.

The cool part about the book is that you learn to read fluently without having to translate into your native language in your head. By the end of the second volume you are reading unedited, raw, ancient Latin from the best authors without breaking a sweat.

U jelly? Guy-who-was-forced-to-study-latin-for-4-years reporting in. If English is your first language, there's no way latin will be usefull to you other than for pretentiousness. My first language is French and it helped me a lot, but English is not a Latin language so yeah...

Many (if not most) Latin classes do not have a speaking requirement. It's a well-recognized quirk.
