I think reading an author's note is acceptable. Having acknowledgements in the front of a book is a good indicator of possible academic pedantry.

Reading non-authorial prefatory material is simply intellectual cuckoldry.

I love Rorty's preface to Pale Fire.

It appears to be a requirement that when writing an introduction you spoil the plot. Actually the requirement is using your opportunity to get your name on the same book as an actual author to display your pseud cred, and pretending like the plot is no big deal between us chums who've read the book is a major part of that.

>> No.14891425

Any introduction or preface not written by the author can be skipped, and should be if it's your first time reading the book.
Nobody reads acknowledgements.
I don't mind reading a note from the author if it's short.

>> No.14892097

I teach high school kids and the amount of them who pick up an assigned book and start by reading the introduction, then give up 3 pages in because its too boring is astounding. Most of them do this. I always have to tell them that that's not actually part of the book. I guess it's an honest enough mistake but it confounds me that they can't figure that out on their own.
