Me. Just recently read Rings and the Emigrants. Changed how I thought about writing and memory.

Just read The Rings of Saturn, and honestly I wasn’t expecting much but it was phenomenal. It succeeded in really feeling like a reflection of things that happened, and the historical anecdotes were fascinating.

Rings of Saturn is arguably his best. The Emigrants is a more approachable work but introduces the sort of meandering style that hits an extreme in Rings of Saturn. Vertigo is not quite as impactful of a read for me personally but it really hits the spot after reading Rings of Saturn and wanting more of that kind of half travelogue, half encyclopedia-type thing.

I honestly cannot remember a thing about Austerllitz, but I enjoyed the essayistic writing style. Might give this one a shot, cheers OP

It moved me in a way that few other books have.

Died too early, but it probably came as a relief to him. Contemporary writers just don't have the same level of artistic sensibility, and it's a shame that he had to share the same Germany post-war literary spotlight with bores like Heinrich Boll, at least Austria had Bernhard

Also The Emigrants is the GOAT

Me. Utterly incredible writer. Finished reading Campo Santo last weekend, worth it just for his musings on Corsica. Moved to East Anglia last year and this book was truly a gift. Recent Resonance FM shows on Austerlitz are worth a listen too, if anyone is interested.
