What are you reading these days progressingschizobro?

I picked up some straight up dadcore nonfiction before the shelter in place order -- What Goes Up: An Oral History of Wall Street. Super fun so far, and kind of a bizarre historical document in its own right; it was published in 2007. Weird wrinkles like Madoff being quoted like a serious, trustworthy voice

I have with me James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Nabokov's Speak Memory, and Thomas de Kempis' Imitation of Christ.

My book is about a man whose life goes wrong in everyway and he goes from a life of relative comfort with everything that he needs and some more money beyond that but his stranded relationship with his father makes him lose all of the money allotted to him ever since they had this huge fight and now he's in a very dire situation, hahahah, I swear it's not me, hahahaha.

Me too, I'm going to read your article; it seems interesting. The first chapter of my book is called Rotten Families. At the beginning I had the idea of writing two different books, one being "Rotten Families", that is about two intertwinned families that are extremely dysfunctional, the first one being an upper middle-class jewish family composed of two parents that work as titular professors in Columbia University and their three sons. The second family, that will become intertwined with the first is an Irish WASP family that has a daughter that dates one of boys of the first family, and this male character she dates goes up to murder his own father due to a complex Oediups Complex that makes him absolutely detest him after he finds out some things, but he's never found out for his crime. Either way, dealing with the guilt is absolutely terrible to him and I wanted to further develop that, but I sort of quit the project and now I'm focusing solely on my other book, which I've written about 500 hundred pages so far, and in honor of that book's idea that has unfortunately not come to full fruition yet, I renamed the first chapter "Rotten Families", but the dad in the novel also is rotten inside and out so it fits anyway.

AMA.

"Hey Phineas, whatcha doin?" Isabella had once again discovered her friends Phineas and Ferb doing something quite spectacular in their backyard. Today, there was a massive, grey machine about the size of a bulldozer that Ferb was working upon.
"Building an instant food machine."
"An instant whaddo machine?"
Isabella took a closer look at the gigantic contraption. It was a monster of machine that was complemented by tens of rusted bronze tubes twisted around its oppressive grey hull. It looked like an giant, upright metal cornucopia with one end facing the sky and the other near the ground.
"Uh, what does the instant food machine do?" Isabella stammered.
"Good question! It makes food, instantly!" Isabella stuck out her bottom lip, feeling stupid.
"Okay, well, how does it work?"
"Well it's a-. It sort of-. It's like a-" Phineas scratched his triangular head.
"Here, a demonstration will do better than an explanation! Ferb, hit the thing!" Ferb complied and pressed an obvious red button. The titanic gadget began to ruffle and shake as steam blasted from a golden spout. Isabella was initially frightened, but was inevitably enchanted by the whimsy of it all. A loud clanging was audible from the metallic belly of the thing. Phineas grabbed Isabella by the hand and pulled her to the downward facing slot.
"Now put your hands out!" Isabella complied.

A yellowish glob fell into Izzy's hands.
"Huh, that's weird. This thing's supposed to make hamburgers." Phineas took another look at his clipboard. Isabella sniffed the strange substance she held in her hands.
"No Phineas, it's fine." Isabella took a careful bite of the sludge. It tasted rather odd, not bad, nor that good. She didn't want to be impolite to her crush, so she slurped the remainder of jelly residue. Phineas was shocked when he saw Izzy with puffed up cheeks and yellow tinted lips.
"Uh, Isabella? You okay?" Isabella gave a thumbs up to comfort him. She gulped the cheekfuls of gelatin in one fell swoop. The bow haired girl retched slightly and gave a small belch, followed by a nervous giggle.

>> No.14999046 [DELETED]

The sudden gaseous ejection caused Isabella's skirt to violently flutter. Izzy's face turned beet red as she bit her lip. The offensive stench made its way to Phineas's nose.
"Agh! Jeez Izzy!"
"Sorry!" The mass of gas tightened its grip of Izzy's stomach. Isabella involuntarily yelped and cooed in response to her stomachs agony. She had few remaining options.
"Stay back!" Phineas backed away slowly with his palms facing her.
"I'm sorry!" Isabella grit her teeth and grunted.
*FRRRRRPPPPTTT*
*PMMMMMMPPPPPRRRRPPPP*
The subsequent large blasts of gas didn't help Isabella's stomach feel much better, only accomplishing in stinking up Phineas's backyard.
"Ferb come on we've got to put a stop to this!" Ferb followed Phineas into their house to find something to remedy Isabella's farting problem. Isabella groaned, her belly still horribly bloated. She wandered out of the backyard and into the streets. She paced upon the sidewalk, stopping in front of a giant topiary squirrel.
"If I. Could. Just. Hold it. IN!"
*FLLLLLRRRRRTTTTTRPPPPPMMMPPP*
The nasty wind escaped her bum like a devastating gale. It caused the leaves to wilt and decompose. Isabella's pride was at an all time low. She wiped the sweat from her brow, looking for a better place to store her gas. She spot a mailbox across the street. She ran over to it, climbed up and shoved her rear into the inside of the metal box. Izzy's stomach gurgled once again.
"Well, here goes nothing."

That's that fucked up shit brah. Hope you finish it out.

I'm working on a memoir about my father currently -- tried it as fiction, but didn't work. He murdered my birthmother when I was an infant, and my family hid it both from me and the outside world for years and years. I'm fascinated by WASP obsession with appearances, privacy, and propriety. Fun twist in your piece could be the shocking willingness for the girlfriend to aid in the cover-up; never forget that the Kennedys (catholic i know, but same principle) lobotomized their daughter for going on a few dates. If given the choice to commit greek tragedy-tier crimes in order to paper over unpleasantness, WASPs will do it every time

>Fun twist in your piece could be the shocking willingness for the girlfriend to aid in the cover-up;
Yeah, in my story, the WASP girlfriend of my titular character goes on to know everything of the murder; but she keeps it a secret. They share everything. The thing is that this jewish male character who dropped out of a bright engineering degree in Columbia University ends up getting extremely worried and guilty over his crime, and then he ends up converting to Catholicism, even though he has much difficulty in believing. He ends up explaining this to a priest and then I wrote out a complex and lengthy Dostoievskian -styled dialogue over his terrible crime and the need for atonement. I'm not that much of a Dostoievskian fan due to the format of his writing (which he's very poor in in comparison to Nabokov) but the topics and the spirit that he approaches things is extremely intriguing.

I wrote a complete family tree of the two families and I'm pretty sure that I can find it here in my computer if I looked for it in a few minutes. Would you like to see it?

>He murdered my birthmother when I was an infant, and my family hid it both from me and the outside world for years and years.
What the fuck lmao? How did that happen and I can only imagine how fucked up that might have turned out, besides how extremely psychologically and mentally exhausting, if not tremendously harrowing, it must be to know that your own mother was murdered by your father. How did you find out and how did your family hid it?

I made a complete gene tree of all of my characters and the two families; honestly it's just such a shame that I ended up not continuing on the project. I had some pretty good ideas.

Pretty mundane, actually: he shot her and claimed it was an accident. Despite some rather robust evidence that it was not, in fact, accidental, he got away with it -- in part because my mother's side of the family helped him cover it up. I've read letters from them, ones they saved for my adulthood, where they reveal the evidence they actively concealed. My father was a bad man, but in my experience WASPs in general are morally ambiguous across the board.

He's dead now, and I'm shockingly neurotypical. Perversely it might have been a benefit to hide everything -- I can pass as normal just fine when it suits me.

Send me the famly tree and I'll take a look

>How'd you come up with the idea for your book?
First of all it was because I wanted to make a case for the philosophical ideas and thoughts that naturally came to my mind; as I kept on writing I started realizing that this was so intensely interesting (also, I showed it to a college professor and he intensely encouraged me that this was quality reading material) and eventually all of it expanded into two different sections of a book. One consisting of philosophy and thoughts; the other consisting of a fiction narrative. I've got 500 pages so far, and yeah, it's my first book.

Why else? Money. Significant life insurance policy taken out six months before her death.

They made a similar moral calculus that, on some level, he might've -- that being raised by a rich murderer of a certain social standing was ultimately the superior outcome to being raised fatherless and motherless by somewhat rich aunts and uncles. Please note that I have excellent table manners breeding; again, I can present 'properly' when the time arises and it's opened doors for me. Some dark part of me thinks they might've been right.

So did you kill your dad or is the novel a literal murder fantasy? Why'd you get the boot from the will and the monthly checks?

I don't really care about his single impotent attempt to put his ideals into practice. I like him because of what he represents intellectually: a rational justification for irrationalism and a morbid obsession with death and destruction, glorification of war and violence for its own sake and for the process of vitality juxtaposed by the conservative attachment to nations and nationality, older strictures and authority.

>Why else? Money.
Holy shit, now that's fucked up.

>They made a similar moral calculus that, on some level, he might've -- that being raised by a rich murderer of a certain social standing was ultimately the superior outcome
But you're not saying that they agreed on the killing, right? Was she like "oh yeah, kill me and raise our kid but don't tell her anything" or was it more of a "We mentioned this once and since the idea sprang up, I'm gonna take the chance and murder that woman, I never really liked her anyway. I'll shoot her when she is sleeping or something" sort of murder?

>So did you kill your dad or is the novel a literal murder fantasy?
The "murdering dad thing" is from the novel Rotten Families which is totally and completely fictional. The "having a huge fight with dad and losing all money" is from the novel that I'm writing but in this one, the titular character gives up on his finishing the medical degree he's holding on (his father and family came from a big line of doctors) and wastes it doing other really questionable and stupid things; he gets into debt. The father doesn't put up with it. The main character has trouble with drug usage and ends up getting into trouble which makes his father detest him even the more. This is the dark night of the soul for him at that point.

>they agreed
No, but they knew it was coming -- in the police report that night my grandfather on her side said "this was no accident, this was a murder" and later denied it. The money problems were public and she expressed fear. They decided post-hoc, no conversation, to help him cover it up. It was an unspoken agreement. It was an absurd lie held up solely to preserve social status.

Also, I'm not jewish and I'm slightly anti-semitic. Paul is sort of a self-hating jew, Veronica is a jew who pretends to be a WASP. Their parents are atheists. Paul attempts to convert to Catholicism. Only the WASPs are happy in this story and the main theme was a defense of catholicism; the jews are a neurotic and problematic people that, even though they possess higher intelligence than average, have to pay the price with an increased amount of neuroticism and worry. It was only natural that I'd make the Rotten Families consist of jews in the US, and even though the Sullivans don't belong exactly to the most intellectual type of people and are less well-off than the Steinbergs, they are significantly happier and less dysfunctional. Ever seen Annie Hall? Remember that scene where Woody compares his jewish family to Hall's family? Yeah, that was the point of the book.

The main theme of the book is a defence of catholicism.

Can anyone give me some critique on my short story?

I walked from the platform onto the train after a long practice at the gym. I’m just an ordinary guy. My thin torso sunk blissfully into the low seat. From my sides, I could see the darkness of night through the windows from my peripheral. The train was completely empty with only me inside. There was nothing to do but wait, so I began looking at my phone to pass the time. Chung Chung Chung, the train wheels went as they skipped along on the metal track. It went on like this for some time as the charcoal background outside slipped by like a parallax. Then, for some reason the wheels on the train stopped. They just stopped. It was almost spontaneous. I don’t know why the train stopped as it did, I didn’t see anybody waiting outside. The lit up benches outside were empty, yet the ramp started to jut out and the train doors opened to welcome them in. Once inside, the doors briskly closed, the ramp retracted and it continued on it’s way. I quickly checked my surroundings. My eyes darted around a bit. The grip around my umbrella began to tighten. There was no one there, but the train was now full.
