Nah, Cold war was a pretty major war and it was won precisely through "degeneracy" (preferation of comfortable life and consumerism over grand pursuists; and toleration of hippie-like bohemian lifestyles). Soviet culture put too much forte on military, scientists and spartan lifestyle while American culture prefered merchants, celebrities and consumerism. It´s clear that the degenerate culture was working better in the 2nd half of 20th century.
