The long feature was about the abrupt cancellation of ferry service to a bunch of coastal communities without road access. The short feature was about a project to build a new sidewalk that turned into a giant clusterfuck when it emerged that the road right of way had been incorrectly charted; a bunch of people had constructed buildings on land that they had been told they owned, but it turned out was part of the right of way. So now, in order to build the sidewalk, some of these guys either have to buy part of their own front yard back from the city or tear down their barns, sheds, walls, etc. where they intersect with the right of way. The crowning irony is that these structures are all on the opposite side of the road from where the sidewalk's going to be built. The sidewalk won't interfere with their yards at all; the right of way just has to be clear for procedural reasons.
