This board needs to be turned into a /general/ board, with topics getting their own individual threads because right now, "Please take the time to read what others have written, and try to make thoughtful, well-written posts of your own. Bump replies are not necessary." is a completely unnecessary rule.

Philosophy posters who don’t read anything and so don’t want to discuss any specific books would be nice to get rid of with a general too. Philosophy should only be discussed around certain books and thinkers to prevent adhd-addled zoomers pretending they understand authors they have not read

Fuck off tourist. You undoubtedly came to this board within the last year, possibly only in 2020. Even just a few months ago there was fairly regular discussion of literature and the sense that almost everyone read regularly, i suspect that the catholarp zoomers who don’t actually read anything told people on other boards that /lit/ was an epic place to discuss philosophy, so now we have more than half the threads taken up by people discussing philosophical works they’ve only read the Wikipedia page of. The discussion of fiction and creative literature is so low now because you have to have read it to discuss it, and none of the tourists read anything

Nigga I was there when "tao lin pls go" was an ubiquitous meme, I was there at the time of the anti-natalist craze on /lit/, I was there when Pynchon and Vonnegut where the most memed authors on here and nobody even knew who Evola or Gunénon where. And I'm not even an oldfag, but I still have a vastly longer experience of this board than you have it seems. This place has always been a meme place, the only notable difference is the increasing importance of obscure philosophy, religiosity and earnest racism/ /pol/ edginess in the last few years, and by last years I mean since 2015 at least. In some respect this has been good for the development of literary discussions, in some respect it has been bad. But "nobody on /lit/ actually reads" is just as tired and just as semi-accurate a cliche as it is always been. Take the good things and leave the rest, but have no illusion about the kind of place this is.

The political economy of /lit/ posting. General topics that everyone can relate to without needing to read a given book will naturally have a greater capacity of potential replies; Specific topics that deal with a text or specialised subject will have a far lower potential pool of replyants. Taking into account time, given that /lit/ is no longer a slow board (in the temporal sense) and a thread can be shunted after ~three hours of inactivity, the pool of potential replyants shrinks further as not only do they have to exist, but they also have to be within a similar—and increasingly limited—time period as you. General threads do not face this issue, as they will always have all users of /lit/ as a potential replyant, and will be constantly bumped due to this, leading to a snowball effect of popularity. The more popular /lit/ becomes, the more exacerbated this problem becomes. And the greater the prevalence of general threads, the greater audience the board can attract. It isn't uncommon to see anons say that they post off-topic stuff on /lit because a) everyone does it, and b) you get better replies on /lit/ that /pol/ or /r9k/ or /mu/ or /tv/, rendering /lit/ as essentially a "high brow" /b/. Replies become less likely the further you stray from /lit/ canon (as far as that exists anymore, even the meme trilogy is forgotten), leaving any actual literature related content at such a huge comparative disadvantage to general threads that they are doomed to extinction from the beginning. You cannot be the change you want to see, because frankly, the majority of people don't want to see your change. Once you become even decently read in a particular subject or genre, you realise just how lonely /lit/ can be.

Yeah I've had a feeling that too many tourists have been trying to co-opt /lit/ as their new home board or something all at once while bringing nothing to the table except their inflated self-worth from browsing now the "cool intellectual board." It's honestly so depressing and bleak, you really can't make these types of people leave with just the creation of a few generals to try and corral their sub-par posts. The board is far too compromised at this point, now that midwits have the idea that /lit/ is some kind of fashionable intellectual space. Things will never be the same.

But what's even more dismal is that nobody knows where the fuck the anons who were fed up with the rampant normalfaggotry on this website went, and given that nearly alternative to 4chan is pretty much dead i doubt they decided to settle there. In hindsight, the alternative imageboards never attracted a large userbase, and since 8kun hasn't ever had a /lit/ board, whilst Lainchan is a nest of bugmen who hold no interest in literary discussion despite having a literature board, and the remaining alternatives (wizchan/lynxchan) are chock full of the same plebbitors who killed 4chan, I guess it's more convenient to remain on this shit board in the hope that it won't get even worse than it is now.

Imagine really thinking this. "Start with the Greeks" began as a meme because people would incessantly make threads like "where do I start with Kant/Nietzsche/Hegel/Marx", i.e., the exact same problem you're bemoaning in your post. Nothing has changed except there's more politics and more traffic in general, which means threads die quicker. So if you want to discuss War and Peace, better hope there's some other Anon who has read it online to reply to your thread. That was always a tongue-in-cheek meme and never a real benchmark, just like the "don't read translations" meme which iirc started at around the same time (give or take a couple months).

As for the getting 300 replies on a shit thread, I distinctly remember making a cat thread on /lit/ when I was bored and getting over 50 replies in less than an hour (at the time /lit/ wasn't that fast so that was a big deal). Meanwhile the King Lear thread I had made a couple days earlier had died with only 12 replies. It's always been more or less like this.

Agree with you about /pol/ ruining the site however. They keep shoehorning their bullshit everywhere so that even the native shitposting culture of each board gets swallowed in a neverending stream of /pol/ nonsense.

The trouble with posters from /pol/ is that they're just fucking stupid. Look at the idiot "intellectuals" they cling to. Ben Shapiro, Nick Fuentes, all these fucking idiots. Give me a break. Back around 2015 we were already having discussions about right-wing literature, but at least then we were talking about guys like De Maistre. Most of the modern userbase of /pol/ unironically has a room temperature IQ. These are the same idiots who believe in QAnon, how can we expect them to have an intelligent conversation?

>> No.15163429

The problem is that the mods rely on reports to take action. By the time a moderator has seen an offending post, it would've already passed 100+ replies. The mods do indeed punish off topic posts, they just do it way too late, after the damage has already been done. /lit/ needs roving mods who browse the board and strike down offending posts as they sprout. The board is treated as a sort of high brow /b/, a place where you can discuss the usual /b/ and /pol/ topics but with slightly more intelligent peoole.

Now those anons aren't even in their own generals.

Around here /pol/ loves to make asses of themselves in Jordan Peterson threads. I wish we had less of these, so those people wouldn't come here. The good thing is that the more knowledgeable anons aren't recluded to certain generals.

I think rather you are getting fearful for those same reasons. Nobody can control what is posted in the first instance, but if you're posting here you are riding the /lit/ train and have to deal with the board community here.
