This put a lot of general frustrations that I’ve been experiencing for a while into actual words. Everybody should read this book.

just downloaded it. did not realize it was that short of a book. it’s practically a pamphlet

sure man but keep in mind political literature is only going to exacerbate how deeply you feel these issues and then provide some kind of political action as a way to relieve them, and political action is almost always impotent and impractical and mixes you with the worst type of people. They have really visceral reactions to apolitical people, lefties are always like "oh you must be really privileged to not have to care about who gets elected" and righties are always like "you must be some kind of soi cucked bluepill guy who doesn't see his own doom is imminent" but they've been all about that specific type of response for decades and neither has ever actually accomplished anything meaningful, except for cultivating really sick little social scenes where they can backbite and establish flimsy media careers.
Better to focus on yourself. You're better than this type of information, I think you should prioritize more transcendent literature and art.

>> No.15238575

>>15238517
I understand what you're saying but I don't think "focusing on yourself" and being politically-minded are mutually exclusive things. I'd say apoliticism and the idea that "we know its bad but that's just how things are" fits in perfectly with Mark Fisher's whole point about capitalist realism as a pervasive and damaging mindset. I don't often read political literature, and I'm more focused on fiction and what you'd call "transcendent literature and art." That doesn't mean I can't agree with this book.

>>15238575
Sure man, I'm just saying it's a rabbit hole and not entirely worth delving into. It's also not as bad as it can seem if you keep your dialogue in an echo chamber like this one.

It’s a good pamphlet that puts a lot of things into layman’s terms (probably a good thing). I see it brought up more often online except for the most dedicated theory circles and forums. It’s definitely babby’s first anticapitalist theory but there’s enough theory that probably errs too far on the side of obscurantism. I like that Fisher also makes concrete political/systematic suggestions which, agree or not, is not something many theorists do to his level of straightforwardness.

“Socialism” in the form of general philanthropy—although not inherently bad—can just be a distraction from the larger capitalist structure. Also, I don’t think his suicide is indicative of how “optimistic” socialism is.

I think it's easy to justify politics to oneself by the feeling of helping a greater cause. But actually living life outside the bubble of media/internet politics/activists feels much healthier and fulfilling. I guess it's a kind of hypnosis where it's possible to get stuck believing that these are urgent problems which we must act on.

What? No it isn't. Capitalism supposes people are inherently good and that their personal greed will be for the benefit of all. Socialism rejects this ridiculous optimism and proposes a planned economy.
