Why doesn't the philosophy of any thinker in the past 200 years have the transformative and effective power that Christianity still has to this day? Both on an individual and large scale.

>> No.15278533

Probably Marx is the most comparable thinker to a religious one as far as wide and profound social influence goes. But the core of his appeal is to the brute, material side of human nature. Jaded elites, materialists looking for an ersatz religion, and hungry masses were his constituents.

Religion is the only thing that has successfully harnessed and synthesised the higher sentiments of mankind across wide swathes of social strata, giving even the common man an interest in metaphysics, ethics, history, philosophy, and spirituality.

From my experience the only people I've known who've been arguably changed by Christianity are simple evangelical folks, which isn't a testament to Christianity as a historical religion. These people were probably inherently good natured, and evangelicalism just gives them the framework to love God and put aside their addictions. Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and traditional mainline Protestantism haven't done that much good in the world, most of these dogmatic Christians are bad people with a self righteous complex

honestly good for this kid. His parents are nihilists and he's coming of age realizing how fucking evil it is to have zero convictions of right and wrong. His parents are lukewarm and he is spitting them out of his mouth. I genuinely cannot imagine having so little conviction that you completely are OK with another group of people raising your son and then getting mad when he has a sense of right and wrong (even if he is too immature to use it correctly). Clearly the son is more upset by the fact that his parents abdicated their responsibility to teach him right from wrong than he is at the individual sins, but this retard "dad" can't see that. They shouldn't be crying and upset that that have a monster for a son, they should be in the position to guide and correct how he applies his convictions but they are unable to do so as they are not truly his parents anymore and it's their fault.

Daily reminder religious people are happier and healthier with better mental health:

>The majority of well-conducted studies found that higher levels of religious involvement are positively associated with indicators of psychological well-being (life satisfaction, happiness, positive affect, and higher morale) and with less depression, suicidal thoughts and behavior, drug/alcohol use/abuse.
CONCLUSIONS:
There is evidence that religious involvement is usually associated with better mental health.
Religiousness and mental health: a review.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16924349

>The amassed research indicates that higher levels of religious belief and practice (known in social science as "religiosity") is associated with better mental health. In particular, the research suggests that higher levels of religiosity are associated with lower rates of depression, anxiety, substance use disorder, and suicidal behavior. Religiosity is also associated with better physical health and subjective well-being.
Likewise, research indicates that religiosity can enhance recovery from mental illness, aiding in the healing process. For example, one classic research study shows that recovery from severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia is better in countries with higher levels of religiosity.

This is an excellent question.

The answer, I believe, lies primarily in the fact that Christianity is very good at replicating itself. In other words, like a good gene, Christianity is a good meme.

Think about it. It encourages its members to exploit social pressure to get others to convert (them burning in hell is a lot worse than an awkward conversation!), it's largely tolerable when a minority (it preaches mostly fluffy things), etc., and it employs ritual practice (Sundays!) to maintain the core structure of the belief. It also does not tolerate competition (One True God philosophy that was foreign to pagans). It's a lot more robust than any polytheism ever was.

That's why it won.

The ultimate test of what ideas people hold are subject largely to which ideas are capable of replicating and preserving themselves - much of which has little to do with human well-being.

That is a fair point.

I would suggest that individuals can be sort of recruited to a memetic phenomenon like this, by means of certain handouts from it. In Christianity's case, this may be community, feelings of verisimilitude, the hope of salvation, etc. In Marxism's case, this is the feeling of being on the cusp of history, and a feeling of superiority over one's former boss.

However, keep in mind that there's a certain prisoner's dilemma at play here. It is perfectly reasonable that a memetic phenomenon may produce, in the aggregate, worse outcomes for people. Especially when it gains primacy, it can use negative (instead of positive) reinforcement to recruit and maintain supporters. Like how cults would.

Think, in the Middle Ages, the dominant form of Christianity greatly contributed to the stagnant nature of the society, and in the last century, communism created horribly repressive regimes. But, to one living in the middle ages, or one living in the soviet union, the best thing to do was to be an adamant papist, or an adamant orthodox communist (avoid the gulag!) - even if so doing ensures the maintenance of an intolerable regime.
