I don’t know how much I believe this. Yes, the ancients had their religions but I doubt many of them genuinely believed in them. Just like most people who claim to be Christians do not (I assume) literally believe the world was flooded, donkeys can talk, virgins can conceive, Christ rose from the dead, etc. no matter how much they think they believe it.

We can get more data to predict phenomena, but that's not quite the same as explaining them. What happens when you have multiple hypotheses that satisfy the same data, such as the many different interpretations of quantum mechanics? You can't claim that one is more true than the others, since there is no experiment to test that.
