No, going to a bar (or clubs or parties), or watching sports, is basically the same. Though perhaps they have more value as often strictly social activities. But by no means do I think you should cut any of these things completely. There's nothing wrong with playing a couple hours of vidya a week, it's the people who play hours and hours every day.
I think, obviously, "intellectual" pursuits (reading, writing, study), artistic endeavors, regular exercise/fitness, or social activities are all (generally) better more mature uses of ones time.

Theoretically there's nothing wrong with almost *any* recreational activity. The problem with porn is that it's highly addictive and psychologically damaging, therefore hard to use in moderation.

With that warning, here is some research indicating that pornography may be highly addictive and may change the structure of the brain (these results may well be extended to video games):

"Exposure to sexually explicit cues in CSB compared to non-CSB subjects was associated with activation of the dorsal anterior cingulate, ventral striatum and amygdala. Functional connectivity of the dorsal anterior cingulate-ventral striatum-amygdala network was associated with subjective sexual desire (but not liking) to a greater degree in CSB relative to non-CSB subjects. The dissociation between desire or wanting and liking is consistent with theories of incentive motivation underlying CSB as in drug addictions. Neural differences in the processing of sexual-cue reactivity were identified in CSB subjects in regions previously implicated in drug-cue reactivity studies." #1
CSB = Compulsive sexual behavior
Dorsal anterior cingulate (dACC) = A part of the frontal lobe which is not yet fully understood. However, experiments have shown associations with many different functions, most pertinent here are: attention-for-action, motivational valence assignment, and reward assessment, i.e functions related to the brain's attention and reward circuitry. #2
Ventral striatum = Associated with the limbic system and shown to be involved in reward, motiviation and decision making #3
Amygdala = Located within the temporal lobe, part of the limbic system and associated with memory (especially emotional memories), decision making and emotional responses (including emotional arousal). #4

"CSB individuals have a dysfunctional enhanced preference for sexual novelty possibly mediated by greater cingulate habituation along with a generalized enhancement of conditioning to rewards. We further emphasize a dissociable role for cue-conditioning and novelty preference on the early attentional bias for sexual cues." #5

Cingualte habituation = Refers to the habituation of dACC (see above) activity to sexual outcomes, which indicates that the subject had a preference for novel sexual images.
Attentional bias = the tendency to preferentially process cues related to the object of addiction.

Delay discounting = When you devalue larger, later rewards in favor of smaller, more immediate rewards.


While there is some evidence to suggest that porn (and by extension video games, imageboards etc.) is addictive in itself, it is more likely that these activities are medicating some underlying issue like depression, anxiety, etc. It is also worth noting that many of the studies above were on people who might be classified as having behavioral disorders and therefore represent "extreme" cases, however given the prevalence and ease of access to porn and video games in recent history (especially from a young age when the brain is still developing) such disorders may be much more common than previously thought.
